ChatGPT is a language model developed by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research lab consisting of the for-profit OpenAI LP and its parent company, the non-profit OpenAI Inc. OpenAI was co-founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others in December 2015. While Elon Musk was one of the original co-founders, he stepped down from the board in 2018 but remained a donor. As of now, Sam Altman serves as the CEO of OpenAI.
